Its been a hard year being a Hurricanes supporter, living in Australia going to the Kiwi game at Robina. Now all the Kiwussies are telling me I have to support the Reds in the final because I have lived here for 10 years, and my family tell me that you have to support the kiwi side, despite it being the Crusaders.

Then through a stroke of luck I get tickets (thanks Adam) now I will have to choose, what colors to wear? Red, red and black, then a flash of brilliance a neutral color

10 years of being a kiwi in Aussie

Next month it will be 10 years of being a kiwi in Aussie, and it gets you to thinking what went wrong? The Aussies give me shit for being a kiwi and the folks back home call us the Aussies, I cant vote here and forget top vote there, I go to watch club rugby here and just watch kiwi expats bash each other and then listen to the Pollies in New Zealand bash each other

Wobbly Wellington for six hundred dollar Bluff Oysters

It was the father in laws Birthday earlier in the year so we decided a nice present was to go back to Wellington and take him to the Neal Diamond concert at the Cake Tin, only problem was Neal cancelled his concert due to logistical problems (he didn’t sell enough tickets), so we were left with non refundable airfares, what the hell Wellington here we come.

We arrive late Thursday night and checked into the Wellington Intercontinental, everyone in Wellington are on edge after the last few weeks and I must admit I did check out the exit options, so as you can imagine at 1.59am when a little earthquake struck north of Upper Hutt I was starting to get real shitty with Neal Diamond, why Neil? logistical problems.

With no concert to go to it was out to dinner at the old Taranaki Street police station (Zibbibobo), and to my pleasure what was on the menu “Bluff Oysters” Sure I only had three, but they were three of the most stunning bivalve molluscs I have ever had, and hell when I take into account my business class airfares, hotel, transportation and purchase price of the oysters they work out to be $600 per oyster boy they were worth it…

Tough times being kiwi

Last Tuesday I received the first signs something was wrong from a message on Twitter, an earthquake in Christchurch, a big one buildings down and injuries, at a time like that as a kiwi living in Australia you feel absolutely helpless, I became hungry for news scanning the newspaper sites watching TV and going onto sites from back home, lucky my friends and relatives are now all accounted for, but the feelings of helplessness remain, I release now nearly a week after the tragedy that I have been in shock.

What has impressed kiwis living here was the speed and the compassion on the Australian response, we may fight like siblings but we now owe a debt to our Aussie brothers, kia kaha, and to everyone in Christchurch your never far from our thoughts.

A tidy kiwi amongst sloppy Aussies

Whats not to love about this time of year? Its high 30′s here in Aussie and you know what that means …. Rugby

So I kissed my wife goodbye and say, see you in October as I start my training for the World Cup, it starts with watching the Hurricanes play the Highlanders (having the Hurricanes back three and not giving them the ball is like having a test drive in a Maserati….. with your wife), that’s ok the loss reminds me don’t take anything for granted this year, then its Blues v Crusdaders wow it was like a title fight, bring it on.

Back to reality Chiefs vs Brumbies, then for dessert I decided to go the Reds (a New Zealand team coached by an Aussies) vs The Western Force (an Aussie team coached by a kiwi) with my pommy mate, it was hot 40+ and what my pommy mate forgot to mention was we were in the corporate box, and I was in jandals….

The efficient stadium staff (Aussies) told me I can’t get in with those shoes, I had to laugh normally its the Maori bouncer saying that to the Aussies, I refrained from verbalizing my thoughts, i.e when did you convicts get a dress code? I simply walked 5 ks to get some $130 shoes for my free rugby tickets only to sit next to an Aussie in thongs, thank godness he had shoes on.
